Week 11 Fall 2018: Finally FTIR
So this past Tuesday we finally went to the FTIR. It was surprisingly easier than using the SEM. The SEM can take almost an hour to process one sample but the FTIR yields almost instant results. I think I favor it more because it gives us quantitative evidence vs qualitative with the SEM. We had great results. I was surprised to not see alcohol signatures since we sterilize our plastics in alcohol. It was so interesting and honestly an exciting boost to the project. Can't wait to work with it more.

I'm always a big fan of quantitative data over qualitative data! It provides fewer chances of creating bias. Whenever I am working on finding ways of measuring my bones I always try to push the envelope and try to find a method to use that is more quantitative. But its even more exciting that you found a method that is not only quicker but more accurate. Great job sciencing Maria!
ReplyDeleteLook at all the cool tools you get to use! Is that available here at Phoenix College As well? That is a tremendous difference regarding the time needed. I seriously hope we will develop an electron microscope that operates as efficiently as putting on glasses soon. Imagine all the discoveries we will make in our lifetime.
ReplyDeleteYes Marcus! We have such awesome apparatuses here at PC. We can only hope.
DeleteI am so glad you found a machine that works better for you. It is great that the FTIR gave you quantitative data than qualitative. Qualitative is harder to compare because it is up to interpretation for physical details. So cool that you got better data. Can't wait to hear more about your project!
